The Riccarton High School Board of Trustees is excited to announce the purchase of Birch Hill Lodge at Glen Tui, near Oxford.
This property has been operating as a Boys Brigade Camp for many years and includes a main lodge with kitchen, living and bathroom facilities, alongside sleeping facilities for 24 people.
The property includes 1.3 hectares of land, ⅓ of this in protected native bush, and borders Department of Conservation land.
This property will replace Kokiri Lodge in 2019 as our outdoor education facility.
For many years, the Board has been conscious of the increasing issues of owning property and operating a program at a location so far from the school.
They felt that moving our Kokiri program to this side of the Alps would be a prudent thing to do.
The Board was also aware that our students and community place great importance on the “Kokiri” experience and it was important that we did not lose this.
Next year there will be building work required at Birch Hill and the development of our new education program. 2018 will be the final year the program operates at Kokiri Lodge.
Many of our community have fond memories of the time they have spent there and we understand that there may be a feeling of sadness and loss.
The Board of Trustees is confident that “Kokiri” at Birch Hill will be able to provide a similar experience and enduring memories for our school community for many years to come.
