English for Non-English Speaking Background Students

Angela Bland Ms Lorna Biddington

International students whose English levels are too low to cope with English in their classes, are placed in NESB programmes according to their level of English.

Students whose English is at beginner level will be sent to a Language School, to be arranged by the student's guardian. As a general rule, a student entering at Yr 11, 12 or 13 is expected to have reached the upper intermediate level in their English language.

All other students are put into mainstream English classes.

Sometimes students come out of class for special subject help or NESB teachers may accompany some students into their class to give them support.

The school also offers IELTS courses to Yr 12 and Yr 13 students.

Specialist subject teachers are also available to provide subject support, especially for senior students, in most subjects.

All NESB classes, both Junior and Senior, are timetabled to minimise students being withdrawn for subject support. Senior students receive help if they require it during their study periods.

NESB staff are all qualified and experienced and the department has good resources and equipment. The Department has a special classroom, reading rooms and International Student Offices.
