School Rules

Rules for International Students Attending Riccarton High School


1. Students must abide by the laws of New Zealand.


2. Students must be at school punctually by 8.35 am every day, and complete all classroom requirements including assignments and homework. Absenteeism may result in the student’s dismissal from school. A doctor’s certificate is required for any absences longer than three days. Students must ask permission if they are going to be absent for any reason.


3. Students are to comply with all school rules outlined in the Student’s Diary and Prospectus.


4. In accordance with New Zealand law and in the interests of students’ safety all road rules must be obeyed, including the wearing of cycle safety helmets.


5. Students must have Parents/Guardian/Agent’s permission to drive to school and must also gain permission from the Deputy Principal. Students can only drive with a valid New Zealand licence. However, students under 18 years of age are not allowed to own a car

6. Valuable items such as Smartphones and MP3’s etc, should not be bought to school. Sums of money should not be left in lockers, but should be left at the school office.


7. Smoking is not permitted on the school premises at any time. Smoking at any time in school uniform is not permitted or on a school organised trip.


8. No alcoholic liquor is permitted on the school premises at any time or where the student is outside of the school but under school control. Students are also not permitted to consume alcohol prior to coming to school functions such as dinners, dances or organised functions following school events.


9. No illegal drugs are permitted on the school premises at any time. The school authorities will also take a very serious view of students being involved with drugs outside the school. The student visa can be revoked if the student is caught in possession of illegal drugs.


10. Regulation uniform is to be worn as required and rules about jewellery and hair are to be obeyed.


11. Students must respect term dates. All holiday travel must be within official school holiday periods.


12. Students are required to live in a homestay situation. All homestays must comply with the Code of Practice. Flatting is not permitted.


13. The Parents/Guardian/Agent acknowledges the school may from time to time amend or add to these Rules in the interest of the school and the student, and the Parents/Guardian/Agent is bound by such amendments.


14. No independent travel is permitted unless organised by guardians or Riccarton High School approved student travel companies during school holidays.
