A Charitable Trust has been established to coincide with Riccarton’s 50th year. The aim of the Trust is to build up resources to establish a capital fund from which interest can be drawn down to assist the needs of the school. This fund will also help achieve a greater degree of financial independence to ensure that we continue to provide the best possible learning environment for our students. Government funding only provides resources to meet basic curriculum requirements. As you are aware, Riccarton is about much more than this.
The Trust is registered under the Charitable Trusts Act and is currently with the Charities Commission for approval.
Once this approval is granted then tax deductible receipts can be issued for donations to replace the initial receipt you will receive.
The name, Peerswick, has historical connections with the area around Church Corner near to which the school is situated. Peerswick was named after a racehorse called Peer, which was owned by one of the Wakefield brothers who were involved in the settlement of the Canterbury area in the 1850s. The ‘wick’ part of Peerswick is an old English word that means a small village or town - a word not in use today!
In the 1890s Peerswick was a thriving little community.
The name lives on today. We call the school magazine Peerswick and the senior student common room is called the Peerswick Room.
In addition there is Peer Street locally and the Peerswick Mall at Church Corner.
