Students are assessed against Achievement Standards that specify the standard needed to gain credit, merit or excellence, and/or against Unit Standards which specify the level of work needed to reach the standard.

Each Unit or Achievement Standard gained provides a certain number of credits toward the NCEA (Level 2).

Students can study a mix of Level 1 and Level 2 subjects/standards.
