Riccarton High School is a state co-educational school that meets the academic and social needs of its students. A roll of around 950 enables us to give our students individual attention and the opportunities to reach their full potential in a caring, student-focused, academically rigorous environment.
Our school is successful and highly regarded. As a smaller, family school we offer a wide range of opportunities through quality learning experiences. We are proud of our many achievements.
We are committed to educating the whole person. All learning experiences, both inside and outside the class-room, aim to engage, challenge and support students to improve their all-round achievement and their personal and interpersonal skills.
We have a focus on academic excellence and a reputation for achieving success. Our qualification results are above the national averages and our students regularly win scholarships as well as local, regional and national competitions.
We have a reputation for achievements in sport, drama, music, and with our Pasifika and Kapahaka groups. These activities allow the students to achieve success and develop their personal and social skills, and the way in which they develop a sense of commitment to the school and its culture – they help build the Riccarton experience.
We are a diverse community – diverse in ethnicity, values and abilities. About 31% of our students were born overseas (from 44 different countries) and we enjoy the multicultural richness that this brings to the school.
The academic achievements of our international students have been consistently high and contribute significantly to our academic record.
The Riccarton Way:
Our strength comes from individually and collectively living the Riccarton Way – the philosophy that underpins the way we think, act and feel about ourselves, others at the school, and those in our local and international community. It supports our vision for our students through emphasis on the key values of commitment, honesty, respect and excellence.
The Riccarton Way is about:
• showing a positive attitude
• taking pride in our work
• being confident enough to take risks
• showing a desire to improve
• achieving to the best of our ability
• getting involved
• taking advantage of opportunities
• making sure we have high expectations of ourselves
It is about how we treat others:
• acknowledging cultural differences
• being tolerant of differences
• accepting community responsibility
• respecting other people’s property
• caring for others
